My watercolors are the response of joy that I experience as I contemplate the blessings of shape, color, texture, and light. I find inspiration for my artwork in nature and the rural landscape. When I see shapes and colors that give me pleasure I want to hold those fleeting images that enlarge my soul and the paintbrush is my tool to accomplish that. My hope as I explore new subjects and techniques is that my eyes will see shape and light more clearly; my hand will translate the vision that I’ve received; and my heart will be open to beauty wherever it may be found. I am self-taught and consider a number of local artists as my mentors.

I refer to my turning venture as Tossed and Turned. I have been turning wood since 2001. I try to mostly use discarded, donated or scavenged wood for my art – thus “tossed” and then “turned”. I find immense satisfaction and relaxation from the hours of time spent unveiling the beauty that God has wrapped in and around various trees. Each piece of wood has something to show you. Some pieces are very basic while others are very out-of-the-box interesting. I approach each turning with an open mind and a flexible plan, as sometimes my bowl really wants to be a plate. One can force a design, but often at the expense of missing the very gift that the wood wants to display. Leaving bark, holes, various indications of wear, time and struggle, against areas of finished, smooth, and polished surfaces remind me of life. Collectively, they make us who we are and how we are presented to the rest of the world.

824 Washington Ave, Detroit Lakes, MN 56501

Christine Becker is a painter located in Detroit Lakes, MN. She is drawn to the weird, colorful, emotional side of being human. Her work mixes playful characters, surreal landscapes, and bright psychedelic color palettes to explore themes of resilience, sensitivity, and transformation. Influenced by nature, dreams, folk and pop imagery, and personal symbolism, Becker builds visual worlds where smiling clouds cry rain, frogs stomp through puddles, and mythic animals are wounded by arrow and yet remain standing. Her paintings celebrate the strange beauty of feeling deeply and surviving it. Through bold color, humor, and symbolic storytelling, Becker’s work invites viewers to reconnect with imagination, vulnerability, and the magic hidden inside chaos.

Restroom Available, Not Handicap Accessible, Street Parking
At The Artistic Lumberjack, we specialize in crafting custom pieces. My wife and I work together—she handles a lot of the staining and finishing, while I focus on building. We have never created the same piece twice. Although some projects may share similarities, each one has its own unique characteristics. We love exploring new designs and, while we might replicate a piece in the future, every creation remains a unique expression of our craftsmanship. At The Artistic Lumberjack, we enjoy working with exotic hardwoods from all over the world and domestic hardwoods. I have felled my own domestic hardwood trees, like Oak and Black Ash, milled them, and let them air dry for around 2-3 years before working with them. We like to expand our horizons and constantly learn new ways of doing things, even if those ways are generations old. I enjoy working with hand tools, sharpening them by hand, and appreciating the hard, old-fashioned way of doing this trade and art. While we embrace modern technology, we always seize the opportunity to use a hand plane or a cabinet scraper when we can.

After some years of drawing and painting in oils, acrylics, and pastels, most of my current work is in watercolor, occasionally mixed media. My watercolors are mostly of natural subjects, birds and animals, but include some architecture and people. I enjoy painting and drawing outside, pleine air, as well as in the studio. I like using a loose style, drawing with the brush, keeping the work transparent.

As an oil painter, my desire is to create work that connects people to places, things or activities that they love. I’ve been a lifelong artist and have a special love for the outdoors. Living in the Detroit Lakes area has given me endless inspiration to paint. From the beautiful natural landscape to pursuing sporting activities, I have a deep connection with the environment around me, and I hope that shows through my work. I have very little formal art training and enjoy the trial and error process that leads to discovery and growth.

I’ve been painting for many years, I think watching my mother paint was what got me interested. I was hooked on watching Bob Ross painting videos and Donna Dewberry’s One Stroke Painting. My moto now is progress not perfection. I am currently in a years’ long art class taught by Ali Kay.
