The Songs of Dorothy Fields
Nothing But Class: The Songs of Dorothy Fields
You know the songs — “Sunny Side of the Street,” “I’m in the Mood for Love,” “I Can’t Give You Anything But Love,” “Close As Pages in a Book,” “The Way You Look Tonight,” and the list goes on. What you might not know is that all the lyrics were written by Dorothy Fields, a woman who made her living during a time when songwriting for Broadway and film was almost exclusively a male occupation.
She created some of the most beloved classics of the American Songbook and collaborated with many celebrated composers —Jerome Kern, Cy Coleman, Sig Romberg, Jimmy McHugh, and others. She was the first woman to be inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame and the first woman to receive an Oscar for best song. Isn’t it about time someone spread the news about her?
Ann Reed’s rich alto, deft guitar playing, masterful songwriting, and dry wit have charmed audiences coast to coast. Dan Chouinard is an accomplished musician and storyteller who tours and records regularly with an ever-expanding roster of musicians and writers. Singer and actor Denise Tabet has trod the boards in numerous productions around the Twin Cities — from Theatre in the Round to Theater Latté Da.
Nothing But Class: The Songs of Dorothy Fields will not only entertain, it will also spotlight the background of one of the all-time great lyricists in the history of American popular music.
Ann Reed is a fiscal year 2011 recipient of an Artist Initiative grant from the Minnesota State Arts Board. This activity is made possible in part by a grant from the Minnesota State Arts Board, through an appropriation by the Minnesota State Legislature and by a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts.
